The wind generator consists of
various parts to make it work.
To build a wind generator at
home, you will need to know how
to prepare the individual
components and assemble them
together.
One of the most important parts
of the wind generator system are
the turbine blades. Traditional
designs have wind generators
with 3 blades rotating in the
wind. These blades ideally
should be sturdy enough to
withstand bad weather, yet light
enough to be as energy
efficient.
Since we are talking about
building the generator at home,
we obviously cannot construct
the blades out of carbon fibre
or any space-age plastics. Older
wind generators used to be built
with wooden blades. Today, the
preferred material to build the
turbine blades is PVC.
Most wind generator plans
recommend using PVC pipes to
build the blade. PVC is suitable
in that it is easy to work with
and yet tough enough for the job
- plus, PVC pipes are definitely
easy and cheap to get. The
curvature of the PVC pipe also
makes it a natural shape to
build the blades.
Use a PVC pipe of diameter
between 8 and 12". The PVC pipe
can be cut into 3 or 4 equal
sections and trimmed to be more
aerodynamic. How big should the
blades be? They do not have to
be huge - the optimal size of
one blade should be 3 feet long.
Once you have cut the blades,
use a generous coat of
weatherproof paint so your wind
generator will stand the
occasional rough weather. This
is also where you can show off
your creativity and make your
wind generator as attractive as
possible.
Don't you want to start slashing
your utility bill and saving
your money during these bad
economic times? Then why not
build your own wind turbine?
It's easier and cheaper than you
think.
